Is Your Cat Sick?
If your cat is less lively or is vomiting, remember that it's nose is an excellent indicator of health. Gently place your finger on the nose, if it is hot for several days you should consult your veterinarian.
CARING FOR YOUR CATS EYES :
Healthy eyes of cats are moist and clear. If there is redness or swelling, or if your cat squints or you see a discharge of mucus, these may be indications of an eye infection. Monitor your cat's eyes closely and do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian if you suspect something is wrong.
To properly care for your cat's eyes, be sure to:
Keep eyes clear of mucus at all times. Infections are often caused by bacteria that overgrow on mucus. Use a sterile eyewash and/or eye wipes to keep the eye area clean. This is especially important in young kittens who may have considerable eye discharge resulting from upper respiratory infections.
Apply a protective ophthalmic ointment under the top lid to protect the eyes before bathing, facial cleanings, and insecticide treatment. Even 'tearless' shampoos can irritate if too much gets in the eyes or if it is not rinsed out soon enough.
Keep all hair out of your cat's eyes since scratches to the cornea (the clear membrane across the surface of the eye) can result from contact with hair. In long-haired cats, when it is necessary, trim the hair using only blunt-nosed scissors, cutting parallel to the edge of the eyelid. This is especially important where the skin folds near the eyes in breeds like Persians.
'Tear staining' is a common problem with particular breeds of cats, especially Persians, and can get unsightly if not taken care of. Tears are bactericidal, which means they kill the bacteria that can cause infections of the eye. Normally, tears flow across the surface of the eye and quickly drain through the tear duct. This discoloration at the corners of the eyes is caused by normal tears that spill out and lay on the surrounding hair. For breeds that tend to have tear stains, you could clean hair in affected areas at least weekly with a tear stain remover product.

Please Note: Cat Bites can be HAZARDOUS
Regardless of the shots that a cat gets, their mouth is lethal! In the outdoors, when a cat attacks prey, and the prey escapes, it dies from infection within 24 hours. A nasty blood infection ensues, hence death. Now, cat bites can be devastating to humans for the same reason - blood infection that goes systemic. If you are bitten by a cat, play it safe and see your doctor quickly.

FELINE TRIVIA
The oldest know fossilized record that has a similarity to today’s cats has been aged as 12 million years old.
Cat urine actually glows in the dark, so if you know it's there somewhere, use a UV light to help mark the spot!

ANTI-FREEZE PRECAUTIONS
As little as a teaspoonful can be fatal to a cat!
Exercise caution in the winter months as anti-freeze has a temptingly sweet taste that pets enjoy, but also contains lethal ethylene glycol. Carefully clean up any spillage. Pet-safe antifreeze is available so please enquire before purchasing.

The average outdoor cat has a lifespan of about three years. Indoor only cats can live 16 years or older!

Cats LOVE to PLAY!
Cats are playful & athletic but 20% of owners spend fewer than 15 minutes a day playing with their pets and many never take time to play with their feline companions. Exposing cats to new games, toys, scents and physically interacting with them for at least one hour each day will help sustain their mental & physical health.

Visit us for scratching posts, mylar & furry mice, crinkly balls, toys that chirp, vibrate & roll. Cap these all off with catnip (leaves & spray). If your cat loves to watch the birds outside, we even have special window seats.

Flea Treatment Precautions for Cats:
You should never use flea products labeled "for use on dogs only"!
Cats react very differently to some insecticides, so products that are safe for use on dogs can be deadly to cats, even in small amounts.
Permethrin is an example of an insecticide that is generally safe for dogs but lethal to cats. Signs of permethrin toxicity in cats include tremors, muscle contractions visible under the skin & seizures. These signs can develop within hours or may be delayed up to 48 hours after exposure. Our line of flea products are natural & safe for use on your pet but remember treating the animal for fleas must be combined with your treating the pet's environment (house & car).

CLUMPING CLAY CAT LITTER Can Be Harmful To YOU & YOUR PET !

Silica (clay litter) could be harmful to you & your cat. Recent clinical research implicates silica components found in common clay-based cat litter with feline lung & respiratory problems. It has long been known that silica exposure can be linked with lung cancer & other respiratory diseases in humans.
Clumping litter is designed to form a hard mass when wet & also produces a fine dust when stirred. After a cat or kitten uses the litter box, they lick themselves clean, once the litter is inside a kitten/cat, it expands, forming a mass & coating the interior and can cause dehydration by drawing fluids out of the cat/kitten thus limiting the absorption of nutrients & fluids. Since kittens have very small intestines, such a mass could cause a fatal blockage within a couple of weeks.
Alternative litters contain corn, wheat, newspaper or alfalfa.
TLC carries the following brands of litter: Everclean, Yesterdays News, Kitty Select, Clear Choice, Sweet Scoop.
We also carry litter pans/scoops/liners/mat.
Bang on vehicle hood before starting the motor to scare away warmth seeking cats!
Cats seeking warmth may curl up under your car or even climb up into your car's engine block. To prevent cats from being injured or killed by a fan or fan belt, make it a habit to bang on your vehicle's hood before getting into your car.
